How to Find a File You Downloaded 📂
Downloaded something but cannot find it? You are not alone. Here is where your phone puts files and how to find them.
On iPhone
iPhones save downloads to the Files app.
To Find Your Download:
- Open the Files app (blue folder icon — it comes with every iPhone)
- Tap Browse at the bottom
- Tap On My iPhone
- Tap the Downloads folder
- Your file should be there
If you downloaded something from Safari, it may also appear briefly at the top of Safari. Tap the arrow icon next to the address bar to see recent downloads.
On Android
Android phones save downloads to a Downloads folder.
To Find Your Download:
- Open the Files app (or My Files on Samsung phones)
- Tap Downloads
- Your file should be listed with the newest at the top
You can also try:
- Open Chrome
- Tap the three dots in the top right
- Tap Downloads
- You will see everything you downloaded through the browser
Common File Types You Might Download
- 📄 PDF — Documents like receipts, forms, or letters. Opens in your browser or a PDF viewer.
- 📸 Photos — These usually go to your Photos or Gallery app instead of the Downloads folder.
- 📎 Email attachments — When you tap "Download" on an email attachment, it goes to the Downloads folder.
💡 Tips
- If you still cannot find it, try searching. Open the Files app and type part of the file name in the search bar.
- If someone emailed you a file and you cannot find the download, go back to the email and download it again. It only takes a moment.
- Downloaded files stay on your phone until you delete them. If your storage is getting full, check your Downloads folder for old files you no longer need.
⚠️ Good to Know
- If a website asks you to download something unexpected — especially a file ending in .exe or .apk — do not open it. These can be harmful. Only download files you were expecting from sources you trust.
- PDFs are always safe to open. They are the most common type of file you will download.
