How to Spot AI Voice Clone Scams 🤖

Scammers can now use artificial intelligence to copy someone voice from just a few seconds of audio. They may call you sounding exactly like your child, grandchild, or friend.

How This Scam Works 🚨

Using AI technology, a scammer clones the voice of someone you know — often from their social media videos or voicemail greeting. Then they call you:

  • The voice sounds exactly like your loved one
  • They say they are in an emergency — a car accident, arrested, or in the hospital
  • They need money wired or sent by gift card immediately
  • They beg you not to tell anyone else in the family

This is one of the most convincing scams because the voice truly sounds real.

Red Flags to Watch For 🚩

  • ❌ An emergency call from a loved one asking for money — even if the voice sounds real
  • ❌ They ask you to send money by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency
  • ❌ They do not want you to call other family members to verify
  • ❌ The call comes from an unknown number, not their usual phone number
  • ❌ They cannot answer personal questions only your real loved one would know
  • ❌ The story feels rushed and designed to create panic

What To Do If This Happens 🛡️

Step 1
Hang up — even though it is hard to do when you hear a loved one voice
Step 2
Call your loved one directly using the phone number you already have saved for them
Step 3
If you cannot reach them, call another family member to check on them
Step 4
Do not send money until you have confirmed the situation through a separate call
Step 5
Report the scam to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
💡
Tip: Set up a family code word — a secret word only your family knows. If someone calls in an emergency, ask for the code word before doing anything.
