How to Spot Charity Scams 🎗️

Learn how to tell the difference between real charities and scammers who use fake causes to steal your money.

How to Spot Charity Scams 🎗️

Scammers set up fake charities or impersonate real ones, especially after natural disasters or during the holiday season. They count on your generosity to steal your money.

How This Scam Works 🚨

Someone contacts you asking for a donation:

  • "We are collecting for disaster relief — can you donate today?"
  • "Thank you for your past donation — would you like to give again?"
  • "We are raising money for children with cancer"
  • "Can you donate by gift card or wire transfer?"

The charity name may sound very similar to a well-known organization but is slightly different.

Red Flags to Watch For 🚩

  • ❌ High-pressure tactics — "We need your donation right now"
  • ❌ They cannot clearly explain how your money will be used
  • ❌ They ask for cash, gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency
  • ❌ The charity name is very similar to a famous one but slightly different
  • ❌ They thank you for a previous donation you do not remember making
  • ❌ They refuse to send written information about the charity
  • ❌ They get angry or aggressive when you ask questions

How to Donate Safely ✅

  • ✅ Look up the charity at charitynavigator.org or give.org before giving
  • ✅ Donate directly through the charity official website — not through a link someone sends you
  • ✅ Pay by check or credit card — never by gift card, wire transfer, or cash
  • ✅ Take your time — real charities will not pressure you to give immediately
  • ✅ Ask for written information and review it before deciding

What To Do If This Happens 🛡️

Step 1
Do not donate on the spot — take time to research
Step 2
Look up the charity independently at charitynavigator.org
Step 3
If you already donated to a fake charity by credit card, contact your credit card company
Step 4
Report fake charities to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
💡
Tip: It is okay to say "Let me think about it" and hang up. A real charity will understand.
