How to Spot Fake Bank Messages 🏦
Scammers send fake messages pretending to be from your bank to trick you into sharing your account information or login details.
How This Scam Works 🚨
You receive a text, email, or phone call that looks like it is from your bank. Common messages include:
- "Suspicious activity detected on your account"
- "Your account has been locked — click here to verify"
- "A large purchase was made — reply YES to confirm or NO to cancel"
- "Your debit card has been compromised"
The goal is to get you to click a fake link or call a fake number where they steal your login information.
Red Flags to Watch For 🚩
- ❌ A link that does not go to your bank official website
- ❌ Asking you to confirm your full account number, PIN, or password
- ❌ Creating urgency with threats of account closure
- ❌ Texting from a regular phone number instead of a short code
- ❌ Asking you to transfer money to a "safe account"
- ❌ Spelling mistakes or odd formatting in the message
What Your Real Bank Actually Does ✅
- ✅ Your bank will never ask for your full password over the phone or by text
- ✅ Your bank will never ask you to transfer money to protect it
- ✅ Your bank may text fraud alerts but will never include links asking for login details
- ✅ You can always call the number on the back of your card to verify
