How This Scam Works 🚨
A scammer contacts you pretending to be from the IRS, your utility company, a tech support team, or even a family member. After creating urgency, they say:
- "Go to the store and buy gift cards to pay your bill"
- "Purchase Google Play or Apple gift cards and read me the numbers on the back"
- "We accept payment by gift card for faster processing"
- "Buy gift cards and send photos of the back to this number"
Once you read them the numbers on the back of the card, the money is gone instantly and cannot be recovered.

Stop — do not buy any gift cards

Hang up or stop communicating with the person

If you already bought gift cards but have not shared the numbers, the money is still safe — do not share the numbers

If you already shared the numbers, report it to the gift card company (the number is on the back of the card) and to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
