How to Spot Tech Support Scams 💻
Scammers pretend to be from Microsoft, Apple, or other tech companies. They claim your computer has a virus or security problem and offer to fix it — for a fee.
How This Scam Works 🚨
This scam comes in two common forms:
The Phone Call: Someone calls you and says:
- "We detected a virus on your computer"
- "Your Windows license has expired"
- "Suspicious activity was found on your account"
The Popup: A scary message appears on your screen:
- "WARNING: Your computer is infected! Call this number immediately"
- "Microsoft has detected a critical error — do not turn off your computer"
- "Your data is at risk — call tech support now"
Both lead to the same thing — they ask for remote access to your computer and then charge you for fake repairs or steal your information.
Red Flags to Watch For 🚩
- ❌ Unsolicited calls from "Microsoft" or "Apple" about your computer — these companies do not call you
- ❌ Scary popups with phone numbers — real security warnings never include phone numbers
- ❌ Asking for remote access to your computer
- ❌ Charging hundreds of dollars for virus removal or computer cleanup
- ❌ Asking for payment by gift card or wire transfer
- ❌ Telling you not to turn off your computer or close the popup
