How to Clear Pop-Ups and Ads on Your Browser 🚫
Pop-ups and ads that take over your screen are annoying and sometimes scary. The good news is they are usually harmless and easy to stop.
First — Do Not Panic
If a pop-up says your phone has a virus or asks you to call a number, do not call it and do not tap anything on it. These are almost always fake. Real virus warnings do not come from websites.
How to Close a Pop-Up
On iPhone (Safari):
- Tap the tabs button (two overlapping squares at the bottom right)
- Find the tab with the pop-up
- Swipe it to the left to close it
On Android (Chrome):
- Tap the number in the square at the top right (that is your tabs)
- Find the tab with the pop-up
- Tap the X to close it
If a pop-up will not let you close the tab, close the entire browser app and reopen it.
How to Block Pop-Ups
On iPhone (Safari):
- Open Settings
- Scroll down and tap Safari
- Turn ON Block Pop-ups
On Android (Chrome):
- Open Chrome
- Tap the three dots in the top right
- Tap Settings
- Tap Site settings
- Tap Pop-ups and redirects
- Turn it OFF (this blocks them)
How to Stop Ads from Following You
If you keep seeing ads for the same thing everywhere:
- Clear your browsing data — This removes tracking cookies
- iPhone: Settings then Safari then Clear History and Website Data
- Android: Chrome then three dots then History then Clear browsing data
- Turn on private browsing when shopping or searching for sensitive things
💡 Tips
- A pop-up that asks for your password or credit card is almost always a scam. Close it immediately.
- If ads started appearing suddenly and they were not there before, check if you recently downloaded a new app. Some free apps show extra ads. Deleting the app usually stops them.
- You do not need to buy any "ad blocker" or "virus cleaner" apps. The built-in settings above are enough.
⚠️ When to Be Concerned
If pop-ups keep appearing even when your browser is closed, or if your phone starts opening apps on its own, that could mean an app is causing the problem. Try deleting any apps you installed recently and restart your phone.
