Printer Not Working — Common Fixes 🖨️
If your printer is not printing, do not worry. Most printer problems have simple solutions you can try at home.
Check the Basics First
Before anything else, check these:
- ✅ Is the printer plugged in and turned on?
- ✅ Does it have paper in the tray?
- ✅ Is there ink or toner left?
- ✅ Are there any flashing lights or error messages on the printer?
Problem: Printer Is On But Nothing Prints
Try This:
- Check the connection — Is your printer still connected to WiFi? Look for the WiFi symbol on the printer's screen or lights
- Cancel stuck jobs — Sometimes an old print job gets stuck in line. On your computer, search for "Printers" in Settings, click your printer, and select "Open queue." Delete anything waiting
- Restart everything — Turn off the printer, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on. Do the same with your phone or computer
Problem: Paper Jam
Try This:
- Turn the printer off
- Gently open the front or back panel (check your printer — most have a door that opens)
- Slowly pull the stuck paper out in the direction it was moving. Do not yank it — torn pieces are harder to find
- Close everything back up and turn the printer on
- Try printing again
Problem: Printing Is Blurry or Streaky
Try This:
- Your ink or toner may be running low — check your printer's screen or the app on your phone for ink levels
- Most printers have a cleaning option in their settings menu. Run it once and try printing again
- If you just installed new ink, make sure you removed the protective tape or tab from the cartridge
Problem: Printer Says "Offline"
Try This:
- Make sure your printer is on the same WiFi as your device
- Turn the printer's WiFi off and back on using its menu
- Restart your WiFi router
- Try printing again
💡 Good to Know
- Printers that sit unused for weeks can dry out their ink. Try printing a test page once a month to keep things flowing.
- If your printer is more than 7 to 8 years old and keeps having problems, a new basic printer is very affordable these days and will save you a lot of headaches.
