Locked Out of Your Email — How to Get Back In 🔓

Forgetting your email password happens to everyone. Do not worry — you can get back in. Here is how.

The Key: Password Reset

Every email service has a "Forgot Password" option. This sends you a way to create a new password, usually through a text message or a backup email.

For Gmail

  1. Go to gmail.com on your phone or computer
  2. Enter your email address and tap Next
  3. When it asks for your password, tap Forgot password?
  4. Google will try to verify it is you. It may:
    • Send a code to your phone number
    • Send a code to a backup email
    • Ask you to answer a security question
  5. Follow the steps and create a new password
  6. Write down your new password and keep it somewhere safe at home

For Yahoo Mail

  1. Go to login.yahoo.com
  2. Enter your email and tap Next
  3. Tap Forgot password?
  4. Yahoo will text or email you a code
  5. Enter the code and create a new password

For Outlook / Hotmail

  1. Go to outlook.com
  2. Enter your email and tap Next
  3. Tap Forgot password?
  4. Microsoft will send a code to your phone or backup email
  5. Enter the code and create a new password

What If You Cannot Get the Code?

If the phone number or backup email on your account is old and you no longer have access to it:

  • Gmail: Follow the recovery steps and answer as many questions as you can. Google may ask when you created the account or what your last password was.
  • Yahoo/Outlook: Look for an option to verify your identity another way.
  • This process can take a few days. Be patient.

💡 Tips for Staying Locked In

  • Write down your password and keep it in a safe place at home, like a drawer or a small notebook. There is nothing wrong with writing it down.
  • Set up a recovery phone number so you can always get a reset code. Go to your email's security settings to add one.
  • Do not change your password unless you need to. Every change is another thing to remember.

⚠️ Important Warning

If someone contacts you and says they need your email password or code to "fix" your account, that is a scam. No real company will ever ask you for your password.
